My First CoverGirl Haul in 20 years!

Some of the biggest recent news int he Cruelty free beauty world, and the beauty world at large is that Cover girl went verified cruelty free!  Holy Smokes!  This is a big deal!  BIG!  millions of women worldwide use CoverGirl.  Its widely available almost anywhere and its inexpensive. They are the first MAJOR Drugstore brand to make this leap

Yes, there are plenty of cruelty free drugstore brands, but the big guns are Revlon, Maybeline, L'Oreal and CoverGirl.  The others are some of the biggest perpetrators of animal testing in the beauty world.  For one of these four companies to declare themselves cruelty free, and to get certified as such is a game changer, and will save the lives of so many furry buddies, potentially millions.  In their statement they also issued a call to arms for their competitors and colleagues to follow suit.  This could be the first step in a major change throughout the beauty industry.

So my first foray into Covergirl in at least twenty years, was okay.  The foundation was okay and wore as I expected, lasted basically all day.  The powder left me looking a little cakier than I had hoped and that signature scent, while nostalgic at first, wore thin as the day went on.  Unfortunately, it did not really dissipate as the day wore on, and I could still smell it after ten hours. It did seem to do well as a bake though, I may try to use it like that again, depending on how my sinuses feel tomorrow.

The eye shadow was meh.  It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great.  Not super pigmented at first but I was able to build it up, however this took a significant amount of time.  The pink color on my lid I had to use my finger to get it to pack on in the capacity I wanted, even a brush with setting spray didn’t seem to help.  I also wish that there had been a matte finish in the trio.  They were all very shimmery which meant in order to do a complete look I had to dip into another palette.  For me a Trio or quad like that should be all that I need to do a basic look, Covergirl fell short here.

The Face palette I got was also okay, not great but not a huge disappointment.  When I was applying the blush it wasn’t super pigmented, but I don’t always mind that for a blush as it is easy to go in too hard and end up looking like a clown, but it was buildable.  The staying factor though was a letdown.  By the end of the night when I was ready to wash my face my blush was GONE.  The bronzer and highlight were still there, but the only rosiness to my cheeks was from my Rosia (Juvenile Rosacea, I get the redness but not the broken blood vessels)

The lipsticks were standard, none of them claimed to be long wear and they weren’t, but they were pretty and comfortable and didn’t bleed into any cracks and fine lines around the mouth.  Not a whole lot more you can ask for in a basic lip, right?

All in all, I wasn’t “wowed” but I wasn’t totally put off either.  This is just a small sampling of what Covergirl has to offer, we may go back and try some of their other products another day.  I’m intrigued by the Olay fusion, but I didn’t think Olay was cruelty free, I will have to do a little more research.

I applaud Covergirl for joining the ranks of cruelty free beauty, being one of the most recognizable and accessible brands in the business they are changing the game and challenging the status quo. I am glad to be living in a world where feeling pretty, is more accessible and kinder than ever before.  Maybe I’m not wowed by the products I tested today, but I applaud Covergirl for being the change they want to see in the world.
